the short version
pick kudoboard if it's a work card, a farewell or a memorial, if you want to collect money for a gift card, or if you'd like a printed poster or book at the end. it does all of those, it's polished, and it keeps boards forever.
pick birthdayland if it's a friend's birthday and you want the card to be an event. friends leave the same kind of thing (a message, photos, a video, doodles, a selfie), but on the day the birthday person doesn't just scroll a board: they walk a little island where each friend is a character wearing their selfie, hug them one by one to hear what they said, and play games where those friends show up as the crowd.
is there a free kudoboard alternative?
on the pricing page we checked, kudoboard didn't list a free board; its cheapest is Lite at $6.99 for twenty posts. birthdayland's Sketch plan is free for up to 5 friends' cards, with the board, the island and the countdown, and 2 of the festival games. that's enough for a small group or to try it out. for a whole friend group, Party is $19 once for 50 cards and all 12 games.
what's the same
- one organiser, one link, everyone adds something before the day.
- signers don't need to make an account.
- photos and video messages, not just text.
- the organiser can hide anything before it's seen.
- a one-off price per celebration rather than a monthly bill.
what's different
the biggest difference is what the birthday person does with it. a board is read: top to bottom, once or twice. a birthdayland site is played. the board is still there (every card taped to a scrapbook wall), and next to it there's an island where each friend is waiting, and a festival where the friends show up inside the games: the rival in the dance-off, the targets in the water-balloon toss, lines from their messages in karaoke.
the other difference is focus. kudoboard covers every occasion and has real workplace features: team plans, gift collection, printing. birthdayland doesn't try to; it's for birthdays between friends, and everything (the copy, the countdown, the cake that lights a candle per hug) is built for that.

keepsakes and how long it lasts
kudoboard's pricing page says all plans keep content indefinitely, and it sells printed posters and books. birthdayland's Party plan keeps the site taking cards for a year after the birthday, then it stays up as a read-only archive, and you can download every card and video as a zip at any time. the free Sketch plan stays open 30 days after the birthday. no printing yet.
